Role Summary
The Marketing and Student Recruitment Manager is a key role for the College of Arts and Law.
Reporting to the College Head of Marketing and Communications, this role acts as the lead for postgraduate taught and postgraduate research marketing and student recruitment for the College, developing and directing activity to ensure the College reaches its targets. They will build strong relationships with key people in the College and External Relations, working closely with academics, Student Recruitment and Marketing, and Admissions teams, and reporting regularly on results and risks.
The post holder will develop a marketing and student recruitment strategy which represents the needs of the College and the evolving operating environment. Working across the whole spectrum of marketing and communications, and experienced in both digital and offline marketing communications, they will manage and implement multiple projects including the enquirer and applicant attraction strategy, postgraduate and international marketing and recruitment campaigns, and market research.
The post holder will act as the postgraduate lead for international marketing and student recruitment, proactively seeking new opportunities to develop the College’s education portfolio, including short courses, CPD, and other Edgbaston, Dubai, or distance learning programmes. They will be responsible for the line management of two staff members: a Marketing and Student Recruitment Officer and a Marketing and Student Recruitment Coordinator. Monitoring the admissions numbers through the cycle, they will develop appropriate strategies for interventions where required. They will analyse data on College admissions and competitors, using the insights to inform plans.
Main duties
Leadership and Strategy
- Develop an international postgraduate marketing strategy to fit with the priorities of the College and University and its implementation
- Undertake market research and evaluation including competitor analysis and market scanning to help identify new opportunities for the College, e.g. new programmes and new markets
- Maintain accurate records of marketing spend ensuring budgets are maximised for impact
- Ensure key academics are engaged with the team and supporting recruitment and marketing activity for prospective postgraduate students
- Ensure the Schools’ key contacts in the team build solid relationships with the Schools and use knowledge of the subjects/research to inform marketing and student recruitment content creation both on and offline
- Work with the other Marketing and Student Recruitment Managers across the University to share best practice, manage the team resources effectively and efficiently, flexing resource across the team as required and managing workloads appropriately
- Develop and review processes to optimise and facilitate decision-making, sharing good practice across the College
- Lead, manage, motivate and support two members of staff and ensure workload is distributed according to priorities
- Manage progress and performance, ensure teams meetings, 1:1s and PDRs are held
- Participate in team, College and External Relations activities, building relationships and ensuring effective collaboration and communication
- Inspire a supportive and collaborative team ethos
- Work with absolute discretion, demonstrate diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with GDPR and other regulations as required
- Any other duties as required by the Head of Marketing and Communications, including deputising
Attraction Activity
- Develop and lead the implementation of targeted digital and offline marketing plans for the postgraduate UK and international markets, with particular emphasis on digital marketing and new media technologies
- Develop the postgraduate enquirer and applicant contact strategy and its delivery
- Deliver all College marketing collateral (writing and editing copy, and commissioning and gathering images) including College content for postgraduate exhibition materials
- Lead on the planning and delivery of the School’s postgraduate open days, allocating team resource as appropriate and working closely with the schools’ academics and marketing colleagues
- Ensure the quality of the experience for prospective students and their families, monitor the success against agreed objectives and make any adjustments
Conversion Activity
- Develop the postgraduate offer-holder and acceptor contact strategy and its delivery
- Manage the process of inviting offer holders to appropriate events including extra conversion activity where required. Follow-up with attendees and non-attendees as appropriate
- Work with academics and the College team to ensure delivery of online conversion activity for all offer holders
- Support the College team’s work on social media to ensure each school has an appropriate presence and is making best use of the channels available
- Ensure the College maximises all conversion opportunities and allocate resource where required for activity such as mail-outs and calling campaigns
- Take ownership of the student recruitment portfolio, report into relevant committees and secure College support for activity
Person Specification
- Degree-level education
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- High-level of numeracy and computer literacy, and skilled in using CRM, CMS and MS Office products
- Experience in marketing, communications, and events management
- Evidence of ability to work under pressure, work collaborative and able to meet deadlines prioritising work in accordance with strategic objectives
- High-level of personal commitment, organisational skills and decision-making ability to deal with complex and difficult situations autonomously as they arise
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills plus a ‘can-do’ attitude
- Ability to present to an audience in an enthusiastic and professional manner, engaging different groups
- Experience of budget negotiation and management
- Experience of supervising or managing staff
- Tenacious, with a creative and innovative approach to problem-solving
- Able to work with initiative and able to prioritise work in a pressured environment
- A team player who can also work independently
- Prepared to undertake work in the evenings and at weekends
