Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy, the Marketing Specialist plays a crucial role in promoting the University’s brand and supporting enrollment goals. The incumbent will create marketing and advertising campaigns, research demographic data of targeted audiences, and work with the communications editorial team to generate awareness of Stan State, its programs, and initiatives. This position is a key project manager and external communications tactician, serving as the primary lead for marketing projects, external communications, and outreach, using paid media channels, content creation, creative development, and outcomes reporting. Day-to-day work focuses on creating concepts for and coordinating marketing campaigns and promotions, managing project workflow and budgets. This role requires extensive coordination with teammates within the department and other key University departments.
Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Plan and execute marketing and outreach initiatives.
Coordinate marketing project development and serve as the point of contact for constituents.
Develop comprehensive marketing plans and collateral to enhance the University’s positioning.
Estimate resources and participants needed for project goals.
Create, write, and edit content for various marketing channels targeting external audiences.
Independently manage marketing project requests, ensuring alignment with brand and editorial guidelines.
Implement, evaluate, and manage marketing and outreach campaigns to support institutional and departmental objectives, including advertising, content marketing, list acquisition, and targeting strategies.
In collaboration with the Stockton Campus Dean and Communications colleagues, lead Stockton Campus marketing strategies.
Contribute to team creative brainstorming sessions and strategies for effective outreach.
Use market research data to develop strategies for reaching target audiences.
Track and report on campaign metrics and outcomes, including project debriefs and recommendations.
Manage paid media campaigns, including social and digital applications.
Web content development, implementation and management of necessary landing pages associated with assigned marketing campaigns. This will require knowledge and use of Stan State’s CMS (Drupal 10).
Lead research, interviews, and the creation of written content for various marketing materials, such as scripts, issue briefs, newsletters, publications, recruitment packages, reports, and electronic channels.
Collaborate with creative teams to brainstorm and develop story ideas and content.
Repurpose content from across the University for different communication vehicles and marketing collateral.
Ensure messaging alignment across traditional and digital media platforms, working closely with the social media manager.
Assist with crisis communications through traditional and electronic channels.
Weekly staff meetings.
Monthly report of activities.
Budget planning.
Maintenance of historical records.
Participate in procedural updates.
Provide leadership and training to work-study students and student assistants.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: A college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, required. A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or a closely related field, strongly preferred, or a master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Five years full-time professional experience specializing in the researching, writing and editing of communications content in a higher education institution, public relations agency or closely related field, preferred. Demonstrated experience as a marketing coordinator or project manager, with extensive experience meeting tight deadlines in an organized and proactive manner, strongly preferred.

Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning and policy interpretation, with sound judgment and discretion.
Expertise in grammar, spelling, composition, and current Associated Press (AP) style.
Profound understanding of legal issues, protocols, and etiquette related to public University communications.
Proficiency in various software programs, including Microsoft Office suite and the latest Apple computer operating system.
Video production and editing skills.
Proven experience in creating materials such as news releases, advisories, grant applications, development communications, newsletters, and compelling content for electronic communication channels.
Professional experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategic communication plans, utilizing market research for audience analysis.
Exceptional professional writing skills in various styles for specific audiences, even under tight time constraints.
Proficient in working with executive-level staff to synthesize information into meaningful communications messages for diverse target audiences.
Capable of handling sensitive issues and complex media interactions.

Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques, including the ability to apply market research to identify communication needs, target audiences, and manage project workflows and budgets. Ability to creatively conceive and execute marketing strategies, concepts, ideas, and marketing/advertising campaigns.
Expert knowledge of University brand campaigns, marketing, and enrollment objectives, with the ability to translate them into effective marketing strategies.
Working knowledge of applicable software packages, web technology, and statistical techniques to achieve marketing goals.
Thorough knowledge of digital communication techniques, vehicles, and formats.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong customer service skills, listening, cooperative language, empathy, flexibility, and the ability to work with campus stakeholders for quick and effective responses and problem resolutions.
Expert networking skills, including strong consultative and persuasive abilities to work with internal and external constituents.
Ability to provide lead work direction and understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective.
Strong problem-solving ability, including metrics-driven thinking.
Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials, publications, confidentiality, and the news media.
Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.

The incumbent will operate a computer workstation, travel to on and off campus assignments, and communicate well orally and in writing. There may be an occasional need to lift up to 10 pounds of equipment.
Salary Range
Anticipated salary will be $4,391 – $4,830 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Communications and Public Affairs Specialist III range: $4,391 – $7,945 per month)
