Position Overview
The Olympic Oval in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Marketing, Communications and Events Specialist.
The Marketing, Communications and Events Specialist reports to the Olympic Oval’s Partner Development and Guest Relations Manager. This position is driven by deadlines, with multiple simultaneous deadlines occurring throughout the year. There is a high volume of work with over 60 world-class events (ice-in and ice-out) varying in complexity. There is a high degree of independent judgment and decision-making. During peak event season (April-June), volume of work increases substantially. The incumbent must be able to work in an environment where there is ambiguity, continuous change and shifting priorities.
As the Marketing, Communications and Events Specialist, your key purpose is to help plan and fully implement marketing strategies that will maintain and enhance the reputation of the Olympic Oval and to coordinate and execute highly successful non speed skating events in the venue. This includes the conception, implementation and organization of revenue generating non-speed skating events in the Olympic Oval. You will support a broad range of strategic projects including the execution of revenue generating special events (both ice and non-ice centric), advertising, basic publication development and production, and issues management.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Must foster effective and clearly defined communication and positive working relationships with senior administrators and managers of University of Calgary departments
- Develop, design and produce marketing materials using Adobe Creative Suite for print, digital and online applications, including deliverables for the facility, events, public engagement (public skating and running), athlete information, competitions, UCalgary communications, signage, and brand identity.
- When required, you will facilitate media interviews, press conferences, and , supporting documentation (press releases, media advisories, etc.)
- You will proactively determine promotional opportunities within the Oval and work closely with coaches, athletes and staff to capitalize on opportunities.
- You will assist with sponsor relations, promotional planning, and community and Oval sporting events.
- You will have the ability to work within various teams, possess the skills to be creative and innovative, and have the desire to be involved in all aspects/sports of the organization.
- Edit and produce content using Drupal 8 for the Olympic Oval website
- Social media (static and video creation) planning, construction, delivery, tracking and engagement
- Organize and manage world class events held at the Olympic Oval, including ice-out events, ice-in non-speed skating events, staff events, fundraising events and social committee events
- Working with Advisor, Marketing and Partner Development on the conception, organization, and delivery of all corporate events
- Supervise non-ice events ensuring successful planning, scheduling, load-in, set-up, operational requirements, vendor assistance, troubleshooting, tear-down and debriefing to ensure the client has a positive and unique experience.
- Create dynamic and fun family skating events as the Olympic Oval supports the Calgary community
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Post-secondary education with a minimum of 3-4 years relevant work experience in marketing and/or event management.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written are required.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of projects and tasks are a requirement of the position.
- Must have experience in the use of Adobe Creative Suite software (specifically Photoshop and Illustrator). Familiarity with graphic design software is required
- Proven leader in the planning, development, coordination, and execution of world class events.
- Strong problem solving skills and conducting oneself professionally in stressful situations is a necessity
- Ability to take on a leadership role and the flexibility to do so is a must for this position.
- The ability to work to deadlines under pressure while juggling numerous priorities is essential.
- General knowledge of amateur sports and special events management is an asset.
- The ability to foster teamwork along with a commitment to working as part of a larger team is required.
