Our Government Affairs team plays a crucial role in shaping Optus’ relationship with governments around Australia and the public service. We are the voice of Optus, advocating for policies that foster innovation, investment, and a competitive telecommunications landscape for the benefit of all Australians. This role is Sydney based, however we are also open to Melbourne & Canberra.The day to day includes

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key government stakeholders at federal and state levels, including politicians, advisors, and senior public service officials.
  • Provide strategic advice and insights to the Senior Director of Government and Public Affairs and the broader Corporate Affairs and Marketing team on emerging policy and political issues impacting Optus.
  • Engage with various Optus business units to understand their strategic and commercial objectives and identify opportunities for collaboration with government.
  • Assist in the development and execution of Optus’ Government Affairs strategy, including the creation of advocacy plans and key messaging.
  • Manage the resolution of electorate issues and escalated customer complaints raised by Members of Parliament, ensuring timely and effective responses.
  • Represent Optus’ interests at industry events, parliamentary inquiries, and other relevant forums.
  • Travel to Canberra and other state capitals (as required) to engage with government stakeholders and represent Optus’ interests.

What we’re looking for

  • Professional work experience in a political staffing role or corporate government affairs role at an equivalent level.
  • A deep understanding of government processes and political dynamics at both the state and federal levels.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with government stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to craft compelling briefs and advocacy materials.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to advocate effectively for Optus’ interests.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, analyse complex issues, and provide sound government engagement and advocacy advice.
